BANGALORE: Protests erupted across the country on Friday in Delhi, Jharkhand, Ranchi, Saharanpur, Muradabad and UP's Prayag Raj over remarks made by suspended BJP spokesperson Nopur Sharma and his former ally Naveen Jundal about the Prophet of Islam (Peace Be Upon Him).

The state has since been alerted. Which, of course, made the video an overnight sensation. Sources told The Media that though the situation in the state is peaceful, with officers of all units and police stations being warned of any security breach that could lead to sectarian violence and law and order.

There is no specific intelligence input for Karnataka, but in the wake of protests elsewhere, officials have been warned to remain on high alert, sources said. Security will be beefed up in the run-up to the state visit, he added. The latter was visiting Parunkh village in Kanpur village.

Police are keeping a close eye on the banned terrorist organization - Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), which earlier this week threatened to carry out suicide bombings in retaliation for insulting the Prophet of Islam. The latest threat comes after an earlier threat from AQ's pious leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in April, urging Indian Muslims to react to the hijab, which began in coastal Karnataka.

In Karnataka's Belagavi, Bagalkot, Bilari, Vijayapura, Gadag and Hosapet districts, members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and various Muslim organizations staged protests on Friday, demanding immediate arrest of Sharma and Jundal.
